When you sign up for our Poa annua control service, we will apply 3 pre-emergent weed control treatments to your lawn during the fall and winter seasons. We begin our treatments in the fall when this type of weed begins to germinate. Although Poa annua most noticeable in the late winter and early spring, applying pre-emergent treatments ahead of time, allows us to prevent it from ever sprouting.

Poa Annua vs. Poa Trivialis
Poa Annua (annual bluegrass) as described above is an annual weed that can be controlled via pre-emergent treatments, preventing weed seeds from germinating. Despite the fact that it will die off in the summer, each plant has already produced hundreds of seeds that are ready to grow come cooler weather. Our Poa Annua treatments are only intended to control or suppress this type of bluegrass.
Poa Trivialis (roughstalk bluegrass) is a totally different species of bluegrass than Poa Annua! To begin with, Poa Trivialis is a perennial, meaning it goes dormant in the summer rather completely dying back. Once temperatures have dropped back down to optimal conditions, Poa Trivialis comes back to life, spreading throughout your lawn via above ground stolons. Because of its perennial nature, this type of bluegrass cannot be controlled with a pre-emergent treatment. There are very few cost-effective options for controlling this weed within cool season grass, however, it can become quite a nuisance if left unchecked.
