Lawn Care Service in Charlotte: What’s Actually Included?

You know what’s frustrating? Charlotte lawn care companies all claim to have “comprehensive programs” but nobody ever explains what that means.

You signed up, thinking you get everything your lawn needs, but three months in, you realize half the things you thought you’d get aren’t covered. Or you are spending money on grass treatment that is not needed.

Here’s the reality. Price of lawn care service in Charlotte varies depending on who you hire and what program you select! Understanding what’s included will save you money and disappointment.

What Most Programs Actually Cover

A lawn’s professional treatment regime in Charlotte is usually seasonal in nature. Think of it like a health plan for your grass. Regular checkups and preventative care throughout the year.

The Standard Fescue Program

Most lawns in Charlotte are made of fescue grass which will require six visits annually.

Early Spring – At the start of spring, a slow-release fertilizer can be used with a pre-emergent weed herbicide to stop weeds from germinating, and a post-emergent herbicide to kill weeds already growing. This timing is crucial. If you miss the pre-emergent window, you will be fighting crabgrass all summer.

Late Spring – Treat the weeds accordingly based on how the grass is growing. More fertilizer, modified weed control, watch for issues.

Early Summer – During early summer, a treatment with liquid iron can help you keep your grass nice and green, while also preventing stress to the grass through large doses of fertilizer during the heat. Post-emergent weed control as needed.

Late Summer – In late summer, use lime to balance soil pH (important in Charlotte’s acidic clay soil) and more weed control.

Fall – A slow-release fertilizer allows grasses to recuperate from summer stress. Fall is the season fescue loves to grow in with cool temps and some rain.

Winter – Winter fertilizer supplies nutrients while grass is dormant and weeds are taken care of.

Six visits are synchronized with Charlotte’s climate and fescue growth. Not random monthly visits.

Premium Programs: The Add-Ons

Some lawns need more than basics. Premium programs add preventative treatments.

Grub Control (late spring) – Kills beetle larvae that damage roots. Grubs are huge problems in Charlotte. They feed off the roots from underground, leading to brown patches that look like drought but won’t respond to watering.

Armyworm Control (late summer) – This product stops armyworms which can kill large areas of turf within just days.

Disease Control – Keeps brown patch and other fungal disease in check. A must for humid Charlotte weather. It is costly and often doesn’t work to treat an active disease. Prevention stops it before it starts.

Poa Annua Suppression (fall and winter) – Suppressing annual bluegrass in the fall and winter will ensure that those fine looking areas do not die out in the spring.

Premium typically costs 30-50% more than standard. But fix grub damage or disease after they happen. Usually cheaper insurance.

Warm Season Grass Programs

Bermuda or Zoysia lawn care must be varied as the grass gets active normally in summer and sleeps in winter. Opposite of fescue. Six visits scheduled around summer growth.

  • Early Spring – Get rid of weeds and apply fertilizer as grass wakes up.
  • Spring – Same treatments with seasonal adjustments.
  • Early Summer – In early summer, fertilize your lawn and control weeds.
  • Late Summer – Late summer means the same as early summer.
  • Fall – Last fertilizer and pre-emergent weed control before winter dormancy.
  • Winter – Use while grass is asleep in winter.

Wrong program for wrong grass type? Disaster.

Services You Can Add Individually

Don’t want a full program? These work standalone.

Core Aeration – Hollow cylinder pokes down into the soil allowing air and water to enter through the punch holes. Absolutely crucial in Charlotte’s compacted clay soil. Probably the single best thing for struggling lawns. Usually done in fall.

Overseeding – To thicken thin areas of grass, overseeding combines new seeds with existing grass. When you add fall aeration, this helps your lawn a lot. Charlotte’s fescue has problems of thinning because of summer stress. So, annual overseeding keeps it thick.

Specialty Treatments – Our specialty treatments can help you with grub control, disease suppression and armyworm treatment, fire ant control. Available separately for specific problems.

What’s NOT Included

This is where confusion happens. Lawn care programs typically DON’T include:

  • Mowing
  • Trimming and edging
  • Leaf removal
  • Irrigation system maintenance
  • Pest control beyond grubs

These are usually separate services. Knowing this upfront prevents surprise bills.

Does Premium Make Sense?

Depends on your situation.

Standard works for:

  • A lawn that does not get disease or pests on a repeating basis
  • Able to avoid heavy weed pressure
  • Homeowners are fine with minor repairs

Premium makes sense for:

  • A history of grub injury or sickness
  • Properties that are visible that matter
  • Known neighborhood pest pressure
  • They desire complete protection without having to think about it

Real Expectations

Even the best lawn service won’t repair bad soil, heavy shade or neglect.

What good programs achieve:

  • Grass will be consistently healthy during the growing seasons
  • Minimal weeds
  • Recovery from seasonal stress
  • Gradual improvement in thickness

What programs can’t fix:

  • The soil is not rich enough for grass
  • Tree shade too dark to photosynthesize
  • Roots rot due to bad drainage
  • Mowing that ruins grass

There are times when groundcover and other drainage solutions make much more sense than ongoing treatment programs for grass that cannot live and is likely to die again.

The Local Knowledge Factor

Companies with decades of experience in Charlotte understand the nuances that matter. For more than 45 years, Hyatt Landscaping has been serving! They have several program levels to choose from. The standard package is Fescue Turf Care that has six visits to the lawn. The Premium Fescue package adds grub control, armyworm control, disease control, and Poa annua control. We also have the Warm Season programs for Bermuda and Zoysia.

All services are available à la carte too. Choose your fertilizers and seeds according to your unique lawn characteristics rather than just pre-packaged assortments.

What’s the difference between firms using a generic formula and those that understand the clay soil, humidity pattern and pest pressure in Charlotte? Lawns that are successful versus lawns that are unsuccessful.

Professional lawn care should feel like a partnership. The treatments will be discussed, you will see the results, and we will make adjustments based on how your grass is responding.
