Keep that lawn Looking HealthyLet’s get something out there right from the get go. While I currently live in South Carolina, my last home was in South Texas, where the summers are absolutely relentless when it comes to the heat. You have days and days in a row when the temp is above 100 degrees, and everyone’s lawns really take a beating if they don’t know what to do. I say all of this to let you know that I know a thing or two about lawn care and keeping your yard healthy when the summers are hot, hot, hot!

Now, one of the mistakes that people make is actually with watering their lawns. My goodness, you might be able to water your lawn during the heat of the afternoon in some milder climates, but doing this in Texas is a no-no. Did you know that this can actually scorch your lawn? What you’re supposed to do is water your lawn early in the morning, so that it’s saturated by the time the heat is in full swing.

Now, of course, not everyone is going to be able to or want to be up early in the morning and out in the yard often enough to get the job done. That’s why there are sprinkler timers that can be put to use. Of course, this is going to require an investment, but there are ways to get things done without paying through the nose. As you can tell, water is the most important thing to a lawn going into the heat of the summer, and the way you choose to water your lawn truly matters.

You can also water your lawn after dusk when the sun starts to simmer down. It can be pretty hot at night, too, but the sun will have gone down. Still, the best time to water your lawn is in the morning because there isn’t as much time in between the watering and the sun beating down on your grass for hours. How you choose to do so is up to you.

Now let’s get to some other important tips. First, you have to watch how low your cut your grass. The shorter the grass, the easier it is for the sun to scorch. By the way, one more thing about watering is that in no way is over-watering your lawn every recommended.

If the summer gets so bad there is a drought; you need to stop mowing completely. Furthermore, that is going to limit or even keep you from being able to water your lawn. And don’t think fertilizer is going to bail you out. The time to fertilize your lawn isn’t when the heat of the summer is bearing down on your grass.

Naturally, you can tell that taking care of your lawn year round has everything to do with how well you can maintain it during the summer. In other words, fertilize that lawn at the right time. Hopefully, you are able to cut your grass and water your lawn this summer as scheduled, but I want to leave you with one more piece of advice. When you cut your lawn, don’t remove the dead grass. It can actually help your lawn. Contact Hyatt Landscaping for more information today.
